They help people to focus on tasks and they increase alertness. Depressants are mostly used in the treatment of anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

Depressants slow down our brain activity which makes it harder to process information and make decisions. Stimulants release neurotransmitters like dopamine in our brains which makes us feel happy and energetic.

Stimulant drugs: Amphetamine, methylphenidate, caffeine, cocaine.

Depressant drugs: Benzodiazepines (e.g., alprazolam), barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital), alcohol.
